Egypt: Security services crack-down Erian and 15 Muslim brotherhoods arrested
Cairo, 19th August, 2007
HRINFO has condemned today the escalation of the persecutory measures conducted by the security services in Egypt as it denied Dr. Essam Erian his right to travel and then arrested him with 15 other individuals. The deputy of state security ordered their imprisonment for 15 days.
The indictment was based on conflicting unsubstantiated grounds varying from organizing a meeting to representing a threat on the ruling regime in Egypt.
The recent arrests came to prove that Dr. Erian is one of the most political activists vulnerable to imprisonment and denial of the right to travel.
HRINFO expressed its disappointment in the role the deputy of state security played which is almost limited to add an official coating on arrest measures taken by the security services against opposition figures.
"As we have asked the lawyers not to attend military courts which are lacking the basic standards required for fair trail, we also ask those indicted before the deputy of state security to refuse and stand only before a court of justice. The deputy of state security lacks integrity in its procedures, and those indicted before it will simply go through imprisonment pending trial for an indefinite period of time irregardless of the nature of the accusations which usually turn to be false" HRINFO said.
