Press Release on the Developments in Kareem Amer's Case

two lawyers of the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRinfo) visited the blogger Kareem Amer imprisonment in Borg Al-Arab Prison - Alexandria, sentenced to four years in prison in an opinion case. The lawyers went to check his well-being and give him support; as a result, HRinfo arrived at some points during conversation with Amer as follows:

First: HRinfo denounces the solitary confinement verdict against Kareem Amer for 65 days, starting from 4 March to 8 May 2007 without a disciplinary decision and contradicts with the law. The verdict rose unexpectedly when Alexandria Prosecution held a visit to the prison.

Second: Amer has requested to be treated the same as the other prisoners - he does not demand more than that - when being out of solitary confinement.

Third: Hrinfo declared that Amer has no relation completely with the organizations, which collect donations -locally or internationally- carry his name. In addition, he never demanded donations from persons or organizations.

Fourth: HRinfo and the rest of the defense committee did not receive donations by any means, refused it, despite the good efforts done by Kareem Amer's liability campaign, and continues until now. Moreover, Amer did not receive donations only a liability letter sent by a European student carries an amount costs 10 Euro "74 Egyptian Pounds", to the prison's post. In addition, two members of the defense team, Ahmed Seif El-Islam Executive Director of Hisham Mubarak Law Center and Gamal Eid Executive Director of the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information presented a personal donation; another two members presented their donations, Ahmed El Assiuty and Rawda Ahmed Said.

Five: The defense team declares that it has no relation with the Egyptian lawyer who attempt to profit from the liability campaign with Amer, by collecting money to support Kareem in jail.

Six: HRinfo denies the fact that Amer has not received or demanded any financial donations by any means and declares its support to the efforts done to support Amer in jail. In addition, it demands that Amer's liability campaign has to be away from using his position as an opinion prisoner to collect money from the joined forces. It stressed the fact that what Amer needs is supportive letters defend his right to express his thoughts and opinions freely.
