Mohamemd El-Sharkawi was tortured
And Ministry of Interior statements are irresponsible
A statement of the defense team of El-Sharkawi and Karim Al-Sha'er 1st June 2006 Cairo, - 1st June, 2006 Defense team of the two students, Mohammed El-Sharkawi and Karim Al-Sha'er, announced today that the denial of the Ministry of Interior to accusations of torture which was published in the state-run Al-Ahram and Al-Akhbar newspapers is in total contradiction with the truth and void of any accuracy. El-Sharkawi and Al-Sha'er were kidnapped of the streets of Cairo on 25 May 2006 and tortured by police officers in the street and in Kasr El-Nil police station. "The denial of the ministry of interior to such incidents does not come as a surprise," said the defense team. "What is strange is that it is giving false statements without making the effort to visit any of the detainees in Tora Prison to see with their own eyes the marks of torture that are still clear on El-Sharkawi's body, not to mention the fact that this was stated during interrogations," the team added. The defense team sees that the denial of the ministry of interior comes to confirm the continuation of using torture that has spread in detention centers and extended to the streets of Cairo only to escalate to the level of sexual assault!! The state security prosecutor registered the injuries on El-Sharkawi and Al-Sha'er as a result of their torture. Despite the state security decision to transfer the two detainees to the forensic medical department on 25 May, the ministry of interior made sure that their transferal was delayed until Sunday 28 May hoping that the torture marks would fade. However, because of the intensity of torture perpetrated against them, the marks continued and this was confirmed by the forensic medical department. In addition, the prison administration made sure that the marks on the bodies of the two victims were documented before they were detained in prison cells. Members of the voluntary defense team: 1.
