Cairo: October 2107
The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI), today, released the Lawyers for Democracy Initiative’s 9th report in 2017 on monitoring the democratic path situation in Egypt during September.
The report monitored and documented the unexpected judicial ruling against Khaled Ali, which jails him for 3 months along with bail to suspend the execution until filing an appeal, over a case trumped up by a regime supporter. This verdict is in line with the regime’s policies that aim at curbing the public climate and depriving Ali of running for the coming presidential election.
The September report documented the following:
- Jailing 24 Nubian activists that called for enforcing the Constitution and allowing Nubia people return to their land
- 44 defendants sentenced to death
- 942 civilians appeared before the military court in September
- 36 protest events organized in September
“The attacks on public freedoms, curb on the democratic climate, and systematic target of human rights defenders and media freedom monitored and documented in this report evinces the continual severe setback of the democratic path in Egypt,” ANHRI said.
